R17m revamp for Sea Point promenade

Cape Town is to spend close to R17-million on the rehabilitation of the Sea Point promenade. The walkway, which is flanked by lawns popular for picnics, has deteriorated over the years.

The city council said yesterday that work would focus on repaving the walkway and resurfacing the parking area near Sea Point pool. A new playground would also be built and parts of the Beach Road sidewalk resurfaced.

"All of the visitors to the promenade will benefit from the new paving, as this will hugely improve the current surface, which is many years old and has deteriorated," said Brett Herron, the mayoral committee member for transport.

Herron said rehabilitation of the 85-year-old sea wall between Three Anchor Bay and Mouille Point lighthouse was nearing completion. Work began in 2012 and R19.3-million had been spent.

Tenders for the rehabilitation of the section of the sea wall between the lighthouse and the natural beach at Granger Bay, as well as sections of the sea wall on either side of Rocklands Beach in Sea Point, were advertised last month.

"The entire promenade will be upgraded over a number of years as funding becomes available," Herron said.
